Rashguards were originally made for surfers in order to protect them from the sand against their boards and all the chafing that came with that. It then spreads into any water environment. They are good for protecting you from rashes, and the sun. For swimmers, this is their main function, protection from harmful sun rays. If you are in the water every day like me it also serves as a bit of extra modesty, but it can show off your muscles really well.

Short-sleeve rashguards provide the basic amount of protection from the sun, but the rest of your arm still needs protection. I prefer the tighter shirts as I can swim better, the loser ones tend to hold me back.
Long Sleeves
Long-sleeved rashguards are the ultimate when it comes to protection. They cover you all the way to your wrists, so you only need to sunscreen your hand instead of your whole arm. They also help to keep you warmer as they provide a bit more insolation.
